SPRINGFIELD, MO – A long-vacant big-box store on the south side is getting back in shape and is set to reopen as a new business.

Building permits on record with the City of Springfield indicate that the former Gordman’s department store building on South Campbell Avenue will become a new Crunch Fitness facility.

Crunch Fitness, a New York-based company, is a national chain of sprawling workout and health centers competing with companies like Planet Fitness and Anytime Fitness.  Currently, the Crunch locations closest to Springfield are in Fayetteville, Columbia, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Tulsa.

The building at 3303 S. Campbell in the South Oakes Center is owned by Walmart, which already operates a Supercenter and a new Grab ‘n Go” convenience store and fuel station on the property. Most of the building was occupied by a Gordmans department store until that retailer moved to the former Toys R’ Us on E. Battlefield (Gordman’s eventually went bankrupt in 2020 and closed all stores nationwide). A smaller portion of the building on the east side was the longtime location of a Radio Shack before it was shuttered.

Ozarks First reached out to Crunch Fitness for details on the construction timeline and the grand opening date. However, we have not heard back from them just yet.
