The Museum of Industry in Stellarton has scheduled three special events over the coming weeks.
Make Your Move New Glasgow with Veronica Deno is slated for 6 p.m. on March 25.
Deno is the active living manager for New Glasgow, where she leads initiatives that encourage residents to apply simple, everyday movement into their lives.
Her talk will focus on learning about how to incorporate daily low-barrier movement and on making physical activity a natural part of daily routines.
Shopmobile with Lauren Millett is scheduled for 6 p.m. on April 8.
The Shopmobile program was a uniquely Nova Scotian one that used a school bus to bring industrial arts education to rural communities from the early 1940s to the mid-1950s.
A similar initiative called the Bookmobile distributed books in rural areas on a school bus.
The Museum led a research project in the summer of 2024 that was dedicated to uncovering and preserving the stories of the Shopmobile.
Millett is a public historian, who served as the research intern on this project. She will share the stories, personal experiences and community impacts she uncovered while exploring the history of the Shopmobile program.
She is based in the Annapolis Valley, holds a master’s degree in public history from the Western University in London, Ont. and an arts degree from Acadia University. Her research interests are Nova Scotian educational history, women’s educational history and built heritage.
A third event featuring Summer Street Farm with Cathy Munro will start at 6 p.m. on April 22.
It features a hydroponic system of growing fresh, leafy greens year-round.
It offers inclusive employment opportunities and its goals include food to eat, sell and give to needy people.
It has a fridge in the Summer Street lobby from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and a farm gate store from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays.
