Olandria Carthen has been our body-glow goals since her days in the Love Island villa. Last night, Carthen attended her first Vanity Fair Oscars party in an angelic white gown with, yet again, a unique luminosity to her skin, especially against her dress. The culprit behind her glow was her makeup artist, Esther Edeme, a.k.a. Painted by Esther, best known for her viral blush looks. There was no shortage of blush last night either.
For the evening’s carpet moment, the duo worked together to go in a bold, glamorous direction.
“One red-carpet ‘rule’ I tend to ignore is the idea that glam always has to be minimal or follow that clean-girl aesthetic,” Edeme tells The Cut. Her signature glam is artistic, usually with excessive blush, and the pair implemented that last night along with a smooth and glazed body moment: “I see makeup as an expressive art form. I love painting the face in a way that highlights someone’s features using different colors, textures, and shimmers.”

For the Vanity Fair carpet, her goal was to accentuate Carthen’s cheekbones with her signature blush technique. “I used Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk face palette and the Unreal Blush Healthy Glow Stick in the shade Berry Glow. It adds definition and color to the face while keeping the look radiant and sculpted.” The face palette is discontinued with bets being placed on eBay (we can see why), but the Glow Stick is still available, a perfect product to create an easy, flushed look. Charlotte Tilbury’s products weren’t the only ones in her kit last night that were a must-have. The other was Vaseline, necessary for Carthen’s sun-kissed red-carpet glow. Though Edeme reached for the classic Vaseline, her secret of the night was a combination of layering.

She layered Vaseline’s Cocoa Radiant body lotion with the brand’s Glazed and Glisten gel oil in Golden Hour Glow, one of Carthen’s favorite products. “I keep the travel size in my kit to refresh the glow on the carpet,” Edeme says. The travel-size bottle of the viral gels are unreleased but guaranteed to be in everyone’s travel bag this summer. When Carthen wore it last year on the VMAs red carpet, it sold out within hours. “Layering the lotion and the gel oil helps hydrate the skin while giving it that beautiful red-carpet glow, leaving the skin looking luminous and smooth without feeling greasy, one of my favorite techniques for creating that polished finish,” Edeme says.
The duo have created a handful of looks together that always go viral with thousands of beauty lovers trying to re-create them. Let the countdown begin for the Vanity Fair re-creation videos. I’ll be the first to say I’ll be trying this layering combo as The Cut’s resident body-care obsessive.
