The District Office Professional Development Center transformed into a culinary arena during today’s Professional Development Day as Child Nutrition staff brought their best bites to the table for a “Shark Tank”-style recipe pitch, equal parts creativity, craft, and cafeteria know-how.
From cinnamon-swirled rolls to savory casseroles and other equally-delicious, globally inspired bowls, every dish had a story, and a strategy. The challenge was clear: create recipes that are beautiful, budget-friendly, simple to scale, and, most importantly, student-approved. No easy feat. But if today proved anything, it’s that our lunch staff knows how to stir up something special.
Each team plated their creations and pitched with purpose, while fellow staff and Child Nutrition leaders took their dishes to sample and score. Conversations bubbled with practical insight: Would students go for spinach folded into an egg casserole? How long would those cinnamon rolls take at scale, and could whole wheat hold its soft, sweet charm as it does in here? (The verdict in both cases was yes; the dishes were delicious!) Every bite was balanced with thoughtful discussion about flavor, feasibility, and student appeal.
Our verdict is that every dish delivered. The event was a clear reminder to me, an outside guest, that our staff are also parents, neighbors, and community members. The food they made was food that felt familiar, filling, and most importantly, delectable. Scratch-made, homemade, and heart-made, crafted by our community-members. What more can you ask for?
Score sheets were collected, rankings tallied, and winners soon to be crowned, but the real takeaway was already clear: our Child Nutrition staff cares. And, through their care, our school meals have risen to make something very, very sweet.
