L’Oréal and Nvidia have announced an expansion of their artificial intelligence partnership into cosmetic R&D. So far, the collaboration between the two companies focused on applying AI to streamline L’Oréal’s marketing and advertising.

Through the integration of the Nvidia Alchemi machine learning framework directly into its Research and Innovation (R&I) ecosystem, the French beauty giant aims to create a beauty and skincare AI engine, enabling breakthroughs in new formulation discovery by predicting how molecules will perform and interact at an atomic scale.

L’Oréal will leverage Nvidia’s AI tool to simulate ingredient performance and texture in a virtual environment, empowering the group’s scientists to test thousands of variables simultaneously, dramatically reducing the transition from laboratory concept to finished product. According to L’Oréal, the outcome is a discovery process that is 100x faster than traditional methods, resulting in a more agile innovation process that maximizes the potential of the group’s proprietary active ingredients for skin protection and preventing premature aging. The time required to go from lab concept to finished product could thus be dramatically reduced.

The initiative is currently focused on photoprotection and skin tone management. L’Oréal intends to leverage the use of Nvidia Alchemi to spot optimal formulations even before they are finalized in the physical lab.
