Are you a beginner who is interested in taking a dance class, but scared it might be too difficult? Thanks to the explosion of social media videos showcasing dance routines, the classes seem fun, yet incredibly intimidating. Whether you’re looking to get a workout in or want to truly get your one two step on, it can easily seem like an environment unfit for anyone still discovering their dancer identity.

Karisma Dance Fitness, owned by Shan’tel Davidson, is a place where women of all dance levels can learn easy and fun choreography, get a good sweat in, and feel empowered in their sensuality. A nurse by day, fitness instructor by night, there’s a deep purpose rooted in Davidson’s intention behind Karisma Dance Fitness.

Nursing is one of the most exhausting careers one can take on, but it also offers critical insight into how important tending to your mental, spiritual, and physical health is. Offering weekly classes all around South Florida, from kids’ classes to adults, Shan’tel Davidson knew that beyond just dance, she yearned to curate an environment where women could find healing through movement and community. “I wanted to create a space that I enjoyed being in. I love music, I love dancing, and I love being with other women and empowering them. I wanted to create the safe space that I wish I had when I was in my healing process.”

Located in Lake Worth, Florida, I took her Friday evening R&B Dance Flow class and walked away a brand new woman. It’s important to admit that this was my first time doing floor work, which was terrifying. But when we opened up the class by each saying a positive affirmation about ourselves, it made me feel confident enough to tackle the ground, knee pads in tow.

The vibrant dance studio was filled to the brim of all kinds of body types and dance levels, yet every person in there felt like family. We laughed while getting it wrong, we cheered when getting it right, and we felt sexy while doing it. “I want them to feel like they can come back here, I want them to feel safe. I want them to feel empowered and confident. I’m honored to be able to offer a space where women can be themselves through movement and not be judgmental or hard on themselves.”

I ended Davidson’s class sweaty and sore yet feeling so free in my body, and with a few new friends, too. I couldn’t recommend this class more for anyone in the South Florida area.
