The work nutrition and transportation employees do for the school system doesn’t go unnoticed. This year Roane County Schools recognized standout members of those departments.
“I’m really excited that we added the school nutrition manager and employee of the year and the bus driver of the year because those roles really make a huge difference everyday for our kids,” Board of Education Member Jessica Hunsaker said.
Midway Middle School’s Tammy Borum is the School Nutrition Manager of the Year for Roane County Schools. Midtown Elementary School’s Darla Poland is the School Nutrition Employee of the Year and Midway’s April Plemons is the Bus Driver of the Year.
“That bus driver is the first face they see in the morning and the last face they see in the day, and if they’re not fed then they’re not going to learn,” Hunsaker said. “Those are very important roles and I’m glad we’re recognizing those folks.”
Borum, Poland and Plemons were recognized at last month’s school board meeting. Each received a certificate of excellence and a round of applause.
“I have to say this about Tammy Borum,” Board Member Nadine Jackson said. “She has worked for two years while taking cancer treatments and missed very few days. Very proud that she was recognized tonight.”
Midtown Elementary School Cafeteria Manager Allan Thompson said Poland should be a manager herself.
“She showed me how to do everything,” he said. “She basically trained me, so she’s the best we got.”
Roane County Schools Transportation Supervisor Brian McKinney presented Plemons with her certificate during the meeting. He said Plemons takes care of the students that ride her bus.
“If a kid on her bus needs food, clothes, a coat, toiletries, this lady makes sure that they get it, and that right there speaks volumes to me,” he said. “I’m proud to be able to give her this award.”
