West Lindsey District Council is excited to announce two brand-new physical activity events for 2026, designed to bring communities together and support residents to lead more active, healthier lives.
In partnership with Curly’s Athletes, the Council will deliver the Viking 1,2,3,4,5k in Gainsborough and the workplace-inspired 9 to 5k in Market Rasen. These two inclusive and engaging events are aimed at breaking down barriers to physical activity.
Viking 1,2,3,4,5k: Supporting residents with long-term conditions
Date: Saturday 27 June 2026
Location: The Venue at Roses Sports Ground, Gainsborough
The Viking 1,2,3,4,5k is designed for people living with long term health conditions to join in and take part in the challenge. Participants can wheel, walk, jog, or run any distance between 1 and 5 kilometres at a pace that suits them. The route follows the scenic riverside path along the River Trent, beginning and ending at The Venue, Roses Sports Ground.
With an estimated 67% of West Lindsey residents living with at least one long-term health condition, the Council is supporting this pilot event through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to ensure it is local, inclusive, and accessible.
Cllr Emma Bailey, Chair of Prosperous Committee, said: “We are delighted to be hosting these events alongside Curly’s Athletes, who are experienced at putting together events on this scale and we encourage all people from across the district to get involved.”
Curly’s Athletes are encouraging participants to share what’s going to make the day great for those taking part when they sign up. Helping create something fun, supportive and inclusive
Jonathan Frary, Founder and Director of Curly’s Athletes, is passionate about listening to people’s experiences and designing events around what they need.
Jonathan said: “This event is inspired by members of our Curly’s community, we know we’re going to be inspired even more through incredible individuals taking part in the Viking Challenge. A huge part of our approach is listening to participants to help us ‘Be Better, Not Perfect’. After all, no one knows what’s going to make the day amazing better than the people taking part.”
Every finisher will receive a Viking-themed medal, celebrating both personal achievement and the 50th anniversary of Lincolnshire’s iconic Viking Way.
Race Director, Arthur Harrison, added: “I’ve worked with charities for many years, and it is always inspiring to see people living with long-term illnesses achieve something they never thought possible.
9 to 5k: Inspiring an active workforce
Date: Wednesday 16 September 2026
Location: Market Rasen Racecourse
The 9 to 5k event is a vibrant evening 5k challenge created to help workplaces and individuals get active together. With competitions, prizes, and a celebratory atmosphere, the event aims to boost staff wellbeing and encourage long-term healthy habits within workforces.
Jonathan Frary emphasised the importance of active workplaces, saying: “Team wellbeing is far more than a tick box exercise. An active team is a more resilient and engaged team. These teams are proven to be healthier, happier, have higher engagement and take fewer sick days and be more productive. Plus, it’s great fun and a fantastic way to bring people together!”
Deputy Leader of West Lindsey District Council and Market Rasen ward member, Cllr Moira Westley, said: “We are committed to making movement accessible for everyone. By breaking down barriers and creating welcoming opportunities for all abilities, we can inspire lasting healthy habits across our communities.”
The event also offers businesses a springboard for workplace wellbeing initiatives such as lunchtime walks, group challenges, or regular activity sessions.
Hannah Lane, Communities Officer for Sport and Physical Activity, added: “Events like these are vital for breaking down barriers into sports. Our ambition is to inspire people of all backgrounds and show that sport across our district is inclusive to everyone.”
