Registered dietitian Sahar Berjis and other experts weigh in on the supplements that help address the nutrition gap and other side effects from weight loss medications

As GLP-1 treatments become more mainstream and accessible, gyms, fast food companies and other fitness and wellness brands are offering programs and products to support those using weight loss drugs.
However, experts note that weight-loss journeys isn’t just about taking a shot or pill: GLP-1 users should also work to “protect muscle and build metabolic resilience” to make their treatments more effective, says Sahar Berjis, RD, founder of Southern California-based Inner Health and Wellness, which offers customized meal programs based on clients’ genetic and physical states.
Some of the best supplements for people using GLP-1s help address side effects such as nausea and constipation, the decrease in muscle and bone density caused by rapid weight loss and nutrient gaps due to reduced calorie intake. Lifesum lead nutritionist Signe Svanfeldt previously told ATN that taking protein can help maintain and build muscle mass, which in turn helps the body’s capacity to burn calories while resting. “This is particularly crucial during weight loss, where the objective is to lose fat while preserving muscle,” she explains.

Berjis tells Athletech News that she recommends getting a blood test “before adding supplements or committing long-term. I encourage baseline blood work to understand what’s happening under the hood, especially with gut and insulin health. We also rely on micronutrient testing to get a forward-looking analysis of vitamin and mineral deficiencies — something that’s especially important for people using GLP-1s, where eating less can quietly mean absorbing less.”
One of the biggest misconceptions that Berjis hears when it comes to using GLP-1s? The registered dietician and nutritionist says many people often think, “‘I don’t need to worry about food or exercise anymore.’ If only. Skipping those basics makes it much harder to come off the medication – or to push past the inevitable plateau once the drug stops doing the heavy lifting. GLP-1s can quiet appetite, but they don’t magically protect muscle or build metabolic resilience. That’s why I emphasize higher protein intake to support lean mass and often recommend Akkermansia to help strengthen gut flora and insulin response.”
Supplement and biomarker testing brands are also addressing customers’ concerns about weight loss programs through AI advisors.

PBS reports the rising number of supplements that claim to “boost” GLP-1 production when taken with medication or purport to be “‘natural’ versions of GLP-1 agonists that may work but be substantially less effective.”
