There was a time in my life when I could throw every drying acne product in existence at my face and still somehow look like a bumpy oil slick by noon. That is very much not where I am in my mid-30s. Now, about a week before my period, I get hormonal breakouts, but I also have skin that does not want to be treated like it is 2007 and I am once again nuking my face with the strongest salicylic acid cleanser I can find under $10.

That is why I have been so into Lush’s Acai & Sacha Inchi Vitamin E Cleanser lately. It is the rare adult acne cleanser that helps keep flare-ups in check without making my skin barrier feel punished. I used to work at Lush in college — and yes, I smelled amazing after every shift — so I am not exactly unfamiliar with the brand. And while Lush is still best known for bath bombs and those giant hunks of soap that look like wheels of cheese, some of its best products are actually in skin care.

Lush Acai & Sacha Inchi Vitamin E Facial Cleanser

Part of the appeal, at least for me, is that it feels much more balanced than the harsh acne cleansers a lot of us grew up using. It is also an oil cleanser, which may not sound like the obvious move for acne-prone skin, but oil is very good at breaking down sunscreen, makeup, excess sebum, and leftover buildup that can lead to those painful underground zits in the first place. Sesame oil gives the formula lightweight hydration, sacha inchi oil adds vitamin E, manuka honey cleanses gently, and juniper berry plus fresh fennel help target excess oil and active breakouts.

If your biggest issue is adult acne plus a skin barrier that cannot handle aggressive formulas anymore, that is where this one really makes sense. One shopper with sensitive skin called it “super gentle” and said their skin “looks & feels great” after two days. Another reviewer, under the title “best acne product available,” said it made their skin “dewy and glowy” while clearing breakouts up “like nothing else.” Someone else wrote that after postpartum hormones “took over,” this cleanser “has done the trick.” I love how soft and glowy it makes my skin, and I feel like the vitamin E aspect of it is slowly but surely helping fade some particularly stubborn acne scars.

If you want another gentle acne cleanser that will not leave your skin feeling stripped, Lush has two more worth checking out.

Lush Pineapple Facial Wash

Pineapple Facial Wash makes the most sense if you want light exfoliation and your skin can still tolerate just a hint of a tingle. Pineapple enzymes help break down dead skin and buildup, while almond oil, cupuaçu butter, and jojoba oil keep it from feeling too drying. One shopper called it their “go-to facial wash,” and another said it helped their sensitive, acne-prone skin without stripping the moisture barrier. I was a little nervous it might be too harsh for my face, but it ended up being much gentler than I expected.

Lush Turmeric & Argan Oil Facial Cleanser

Lush’s Turmeric & Argan Facial Cleanser is creamier and a little heavier, so I reach for it when my skin feels dry, dull, or stressed out but I am still dealing with breakouts. Argan oil and rice bran oil give it a softer, more hydrating feel, while honey cleans without feeling harsh and fresh turmeric root supports brightness. One reviewer said it cut down on redness and midday oil without drying their skin out, while another said it left their skin “soft and bouncy,” which I can confirm — it made my skin so touchably supple that I had a hard time NOT touching my skin, although I did feel a bit shiny towards the end of the day.

At this point, I mostly think of them by skin mood. Acai & Sacha Inchi is the one I use when my skin is oily, hormonal, or generally being difficult but still needs some cushion. Pineapple is the one I reach for when I want light exfoliation and feel like my skin wants a break from oil cleansing. Turmeric & Argan is the one I use when my face feels dry, tight, or dull but I am still dealing with breakouts. If you are trying to find a cleanser for adult acne that will not wreck your skin barrier, these three from Lush are a great start, depending on exactly where your skin is at.
