Health & Wellness at William & Mary has introduced online scheduling tools in the Student Health Center and Counseling Center, modernizing how students connect to care and offering greater flexibility when scheduling services. Walk-in appointments, phone scheduling and 24/7 virtual care remain available, so students can choose the scheduling option that works best for their needs and comfort levels.
The Student Health Center
The Student Health Center at William & Mary provides a full range of primary care services, including the evaluation, treatment and prevention of acute or chronic physical, mental and social health issues. With a mission to ensure the highest quality medical care, the Health Center commits to promoting health and healthy lifestyles for students to achieve a fulfilling college experience.
After patient satisfaction surveys identified online scheduling as the top request from students, the Student Health Center introduced this feature to better support the unique nature of student schedules.
Health Information Management Specialist Shelly Smith said, “Since implementing the online scheduling system, we have observed a notable increase in the number of appointments scheduled outside of standard business hours. While the overall volume of students seeking care has remained consistently high, the online tool has diversified how and when students schedule their appointments.”
With positive feedback from students, the Student Health Center continues to expand convenient access to care through the Student Health Portal.

“We are always exploring ways to improve access to care,” said Smith. “While most appointments can be scheduled online, some services may still require you to contact us directly. We are currently working to expand appointment options available in the online portal.”
Even with this growing online availability, the Student Health Center’s staff remains available for students who prefer personal assistance, have urgent concerns, or require help with any personal needs.
“Our goal is to offer multiple pathways to care, ensuring every student at William & Mary can connect with the support they need in a way that works best for them,” said Smith.
The Counseling Center
The Counseling Center at William & Mary specializes in the developmental and clinical concerns of college students, including relationship and family issues, academic and personal stress, identity development and personal growth.
Online scheduling is also now available for select Counseling Center appointments, following conversations with Student Assembly. Students can schedule initial consultations online to discuss the best service for them. Appointment availability is expected to vary throughout the semester based on student demand.
For students needing urgent support, immediate care remains available. Students can stop by the Counseling Center during business hours to meet with a therapist or call 757-221-3620 after hours. TalkNow through TimelyCare provides 24/7 access to mental health professionals, with no appointment needed.
Dr. Carina Sudarsky-Gleiser, Director of the Counseling Center, and Dr. Kevin Clancey, Associate Director for Clinical Services, who helped lead and support the effort for the Center to add online scheduling, said, “Providing an online scheduling option helps ensure that students can take that first step in a way that feels comfortable, private and convenient. Ultimately, it supports the Center’s mission to make mental health care more approachable and responsive to students’ needs.”
Launching online scheduling through the Counseling Center website yielded positive early engagement, with many initial consultation appointments scheduled through this feature. The online option offers William & Mary students an easy way to schedule services, including an initial consultation with a counselor to evaluate the most appropriate level of care or a referral appointment with the Mental Health Services Coordinator to connect students to community therapy, psychological testing and psychiatric evaluations.
William & Mary students now have more ways than ever to connect with the care and support they need. Online scheduling joins existing pathways to care, including by phone, in-person, or through 24/7 virtual options like TimelyCare.
