The Selma (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated filled the Bullock Community Center with music, movement and meaningful conversation on Saturday, March 28, as neighbors of all ages gathered for the chapter’s Black Family Wellness Expo.
Chapter President Patricia Kendrick Robinson, MD opened the day at 9 a.m., thanking attendees for taking charge of their health and laying out a program that blended free clinical screenings with hands‑on workshops, family activities, and frank conversations about mental health, recovery, and aging. Co‑chairs Judge Vernetta Perkins Walker and Attorney Kameisha Logan helped guide the morning’s flow and moderated the day, while DJ McGuire kept the energy high with music and vendor shout‑outs.
The morning’s centerpiece was a Community Mental Health and Family Wellness Circle featuring local leaders and educators — Miah Tolbert (Rise and Recover), Dr. Rose Wilkins (City Block Wellness), Lisa James (Selma City Council), Dr. Tanya Miles and Wanda Tyler (Dallas County Schools), and Reginald Glover (Selma City Schools) — who focused on practical coping strategies, school‑based supports, and culturally competent care. After the panel, instructor Sherika Jernigan led a lively line‑dancing session that had families moving together on the gym floor.
Organizers staged three intimate fireside chats on recovery, prevention, and elder care. Miah Tolbert opened with recovery and youth mental‑health resources; Jerria Martin (Drug Free Communities) discussed prevention and youth programming; and Uleter Nix (BC Home Care Agency) offered guidance on elder‑care services and caregivers. Portions of the conversations were streamed on Facebook Live so the lessons could reach the wider community.
