Millersville University introduced a wellness vending machine offering affordable and discreet access to health products for students.
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — At Millersville University, officials are working to make health and wellness products more accessible for students through a new on-campus initiative.
A wellness vending machine has been installed inside the Student Memorial Center, giving students and visitors convenient access to a variety of health essentials — from bandages to cough medicine — in a discreet and easy-to-use way.
University leaders say the goal is to provide not only products but also support and resources in a way that meets students where they are.
“It all goes back to providing products and providing support and resources. It’s a great way to be able to provide some that may be necessary to the public in a safe, discreet way,” Dr. Susan Moyer, one of the women who got the machine installed, said.
The machine was funded through a grant and offers a mix of free and low-cost items, making it more affordable than traditional retail options. Officials say affordability is especially important for college students already managing financial stress.
“We think that access and affordability is so important, especially for our college students who have enough financial concerns and things to worry about,” Lauren Blevins, Director of University Health Services, explained.
Beyond cost and convenience, university leaders emphasize the importance of reducing stigma around certain health products. The vending machine allows students to access what they need privately, without fear of judgment.
“Certainly, there are some health care products that have a bit of a stigma around them, so we’re increasing access for students and patients without feeling shame or stigma for getting what they need,” Blevins said.
In addition to the products themselves, each purchase includes a QR code that connects users to additional campus and community resources, helping students find further support if needed.
University officials encourage students to take advantage of the new resource and explore the additional services available through the QR system.
