Imagine watching a basketball game and someone tells you one statistic afterwards: “That team made 10 three-pointers tonight.”

What does that actually tell you? Not much.

You don’t know if they won or lost the game. You don’t know how well they played defense. You don’t know how many shots they attempted. You don’t even know if 10 three-pointers is good or bad unless you’re familiar with the sport. It’s just one small piece of a much bigger story.

In many ways, the scale works the same way when it comes to your health.

More than body weight

Your body weight is just one number. By itself, it tells us very little about what’s really happening inside your body. It doesn’t reveal how much muscle you carry, how much body fat you have, or whether your bones are strong and healthy.

Two people can weigh exactly the same yet have completely different levels of muscle mass, fat distribution, and bone density – factors that play a major role in strength, longevity, and disease risk.

That’s why tools like a DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan are becoming increasingly valuable in modern health and fitness.

Unlike the scale, a DEXA scan provides a much deeper look at your body by measuring fat mass, lean muscle mass, and bone mineral density.

Instead of seeing just one number in your health story, you get three.

Understanding more of the story can be one of the most powerful steps you can take toward improving your long-term health.

At the Connection Wellness Center’s upcoming Stronger Together Health Fair, we’re excited to bring a mobile DEXA scan unit to the community so people can gain deeper insight into their strength, longevity, and risk for metabolic disease.

Everyone who comes to the event and gets a scan will walk away ready to make a plan to improve their long-term health.

The health fair is May 16 at the Annandale Volunteer Fire Department’s social hall at 7128 Columbia Pike, Annandale. The DEXA scan van will be available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sign up for a scan here.

An accurate measurement

If this is the first time you’ve heard of a DEXA scan, you might be asking how different it is from the smart scale in your bathroom. That’s a great question.

The biggest difference is accuracy. Most traditional body composition tests, such as smart scales, handheld scanners, and calipers, have error rates of 5-15 percent. DEXA scans have a 1-2 percent margin of error.

DEXA scans also provide insight into visceral fat, the fat stored around internal organs that is strongly associated with heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammation, and metabolic disorders.

Visceral fat is NOT always visible from the outside. That means many people may carry unhealthy levels without realizing they are at risk for the conditions listed above.

Simple, fast, and non-invasive

Despite its advanced technology, the DEXA scan process is incredibly simple.

There is no special preparation required – no fasting, dehydration, caffeine restriction, or intense protocols.

The scan itself takes only a few minutes, and the results provide immediate, actionable data about your body composition and bone health.

This makes DEXA an accessible option for anyone who wants accurate information without disrupting their daily routine.

We’re bringing DEXA to our community

At the Connection Wellness Center, our mission is to help people build strength, improve their health, and stay active for life.

That’s why we’re hosting the Stronger Together Health Fair – an event designed to give our community access to valuable tools and insights that support lifelong wellness.

One of the highlights will be the mobile DEXA scan van, giving attendees the opportunity to gain clinical-grade body composition data that is typically only available through specialized medical facilities. And to be honest, those facilities can have a waiting period of three months or more.

In addition to DEXA scans, the event will feature:

Longevity and functional fitness assessments.

Blood pressure screenings.

Metabolic health insights.

Wellness vendors from the local community.

Education on strength, recovery, and preventive health.

Even if you’re not ready to participate in the assessments, you’re welcome to stop by, meet the vendors, and explore the resources available.
