Amal Clooney proves that hair inspiration can strike from anywhere or anything—including a $20,000 watch.
The human rights lawyer stepped out in Milan for Cartier’s “Women’s Initiative” Dialogues event in a sleek Elie Saab black croc pencil skirt and boat-neck top—both serving as the perfect neutral backdrop for her fresh highlights, which were inspired by Cartier’s Panthère watch and the rich golden-brown tones of a panther.
“For Amal’s hair color, I was inspired by Cartier La Panthère,” hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, who created Clooney’s style, tells Bazaar. “It combines warmth with face-framing pieces. It’s a little more striking and bolder.” While Clooney has historically been a brunette, Giannetos wanted to add a bit of dimension with warm, caramel hues throughout the hair with an emphasis on face-framing highlights at the front. “This look has a lot of contrast, but blends so perfectly together,” he adds. “The hair was very close to the color she usually has, but with a little inspiration from Cartier.”
Giannetos let the highlights take center stage, allowing the color to add shape, rather than the cut. He kept Clooney’s hair long with barely-there layers, courtesy of Great Lengths extensions, and a subtle side part. He also created Clooney’s brown, earth-toned makeup look, using Charlotte Tilbury to create an all-over bronze, slightly peachy-pink cheeks, and a nude, blurred lip that perfectly matched her rich honey highlights.
“It’s always very inspiring to see Amal when she speaks in her field of expertise. It makes me feel very driven,” the stylist says. “She inspired me and always makes me think out of the box.” From the blurred lip to the Cartier-inspired highlights, everything about Clooney’s look feels like a springtime twist on ‘90s beauty.
