College is a time of immense growth and new discoveries, but those exciting opportunities may bring moments of stress. Between managing coursework, building a social life, and looking towards the future, it’s completely normal to feel the weight of it all from time to time.
At Southern Utah University, we believe that your well-being is the foundation of your success. No one is meant to carry weight alone, and with SUU’s extensive resources, no one has to. Whether you need a quiet place to breathe or professional guidance to work through a challenge, here is how you can find support and prioritize your wellness.
The Health & Wellness Center
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and aren’t sure where to begin, start by visiting the Health and Wellness Center at the Sharwan Smith Student Center. This is SUU’s central hub for connection and support. The team here is dedicated to prevention, education, and resource navigation. They provide a welcoming, low-pressure environment with a wide variety of resources.
Students can recharge using the Wellness Center’s “self-care station,” find a moment of quiet in the Wellness Room, or use tools like Bi-Tappers to help them focus during busy weeks. T-birds can also connect with mentors, such as an ACE or peer mentor, to help them handle stress.
Not sure what you need? The center also acts as a liaison to other campus services, ensuring you get connected to the right help quickly.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
When everyday stress starts to feel like too much, or if you’re navigating more complex challenges, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is here to help. CAPS is staffed by licensed mental health professionals who provide a safe, confidential space for students to talk through what’s on their minds. Their services include:
Individual & Group Counseling: A chance to gain new perspectives in a private or supportive group setting.
Walk-in Consultations: Need to talk now? CAPS offers 10-15 minute drop-in sessions (M-F, 11am-12pm), making it easy to get quick, professional insight without a long wait.
Online Toolkits: If you’re waiting for an appointment or prefer self-guided support, check out the CAPS website for online self-help tools and clinical resources.
To get started with CAPS, call (435) 865-8621 or visit their office in the Bennion Building (BB 212).
Digital Support
If you need support outside of typical business hours, SUU has invested in several digital platforms to ensure you have 24/7 access to help.
TimelyCare offers free, 24/7 support for when you need to talk to someone, as well as scheduled teletherapy.
SafeUT is a free, confidential app that connects you to licensed clinicians for crisis support via chat or text.
Simple Steps Forward
Beyond receiving formal support, building small and healthy habits can make a huge difference in your resilience.
Move Your Body: Whether it’s hitting the fitness center or enjoying our beautiful outdoors, physical activity is a natural stress-reducer.
Prioritize Sleep & Nutrition: A consistent sleep schedule and regular, nourishing meals are the building blocks of mental clarity.
Practice Mindfulness: Take a few minutes to step away from screens and reconnect with yourself. Simple acts such as deep breathing, taking a quick walk, or journaling can help you reset.
You Are Not Alone
Asking for help is a sign of strength and a commitment to your own growth. At SUU, you are an essential part of a community where you are known, supported, and uplifted. This is where you soar, and sometimes, that means taking the time to make sure you’re ready to take flight.
