The 2026 Mark Blumenthal Herbal Community Builder Award has been presented to a prominent herbalist, educator, and author. The award recognizes significant contributions to fostering connections within the herbal and botanical communities.

The recipient, Kathi Keville, is the director of the American Herb Association (AHA) and founder of the Green Medicine Herb School. She has been a key figure in the herbal medicine movement for over 50 years, contributing through her writing, teaching, and leadership. Keville has authored 17 books and more than 150 articles on herbs, essential oils, and herb gardening. She also leads international herb-focused tours and has hosted educational programs on radio and television.

“I’m surprised and delighted to receive this award from the distinguished American Botanical Council,” said Keville. “It’s an honor being recognized as an herbalist. It’s been a great job and a wonderful opportunity to help others. I also love being connected to nature since plants are the true healers.”

Keville’s contributions include founding the Green Medicine Herb School in 1975, where she has taught herbal medicine, aromatherapy, and herb cultivation. She has also served as the editor of the AHA’s quarterly newsletter since 1980 and co-founded the AHA in 1981.

Keville’s books, such as Essential Oils & Aromatherapy for Dummies and The Aromatherapy Garden, have been translated into multiple languages. Her efforts have inspired thousands of readers, students, and practitioners to explore the healing value of medicinal plants.

Recognizing decades of dedication

“Kathi has been involved with herbal studies and education longer than most herbalists in North America — over 50 years! She’s one of the most generous and passionately committed herbalists I’ve ever met,” said Blumenthal, founder and executive director of ABC.  “Kathi is a true herbal treasure and widely loved and admired in the herbal community that she has helped create.”

Keville’s influence extends beyond her writing and teaching. She has hosted the Garden Forum Show, a monthly radio program, and co-hosted 18 episodes of the aromatherapy program Everybody Nose on Veria Wellness Network. Her television appearances include interviews on the Discovery Channel and local news programs.
