Parliament reviews immunity suspension requests

A special, emergency session of the 15-member parliamentary Ethics Committee is being held Tuesday to examine a request by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office to lift the immunity of eleven lawmakers named in a case related to the OPEKEPE farm subsidy scandal.

The committee, where members of the ruling party’s parliamentary group hold a majority with eight seats, has summoned the eleven lawmakers to provide explanations regarding the allegations concerning each of them.

Those called have the option to appear in person or to submit written memoranda. Following the completion of the process, the Ethics Committee will, in accordance with parliamentary rules, issue a separate recommendation for each lawmaker to the national assembly on whether parliamentary immunity should be lifted.

The recommendation is not binding. The final decision will be made by the full parliament in a roll-call vote, also conducted separately for each of the eleven lawmakers, during a special session expected to take place after April 19.

The case concerns a recent second case file in which the names of the eleven lawmakers are included among those implicated.
