Immunity of two more ND MPs to be discussed on April 20

The 15-member parliamentary Ethics Committee will convene on April 20 to discuss a request by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office to lift the immunity of two more sitting lawmakers from the governing New Democracy party, a parliamentary source said Tuesday.

The case file on the two MPs involves alleged incitement in breach of duty by Haralambos Athanassiou and Tassos Hadzivassiliou.

Earlier in the day, the same panel recommended the lifting the immunity of another 11 New Democracy lawmakers

Athanassiou, himself a member of the ethics committee, was replaced by New Democracy lawmaker Ioanna Litrivi.

According to the same source, an effort will be made to include both committee opinions in the plenary session that will have the final vote.

The files were forwarded by European prosecutors to court of first instance prosecutors, as the alleged offense of breach of duty is not part of the EPPO’s brief.

The final decision in whether to lift their immunity will be made by the full parliament in a roll-call vote on a date to be decided by the Conference of Presidents.
