Atavista Fitness recently opened at Uptown Fayetteville, a mixed-use development of Fayetteville developer Specialized Real Estate Group.

Founded by Fayetteville resident Gabriel Luna, the 2,000-square-foot gym at 3959 N. Steele Blvd., Suite 116, offers 24/7 access and is designed for people of all fitness levels. Luna declined to provide an investment cost to open the gym, but it’s a project he’s been working on since he was 16.

The gym space “emphasizes simplicity, open layout and carefully selected training tools that support consistent, everyday fitness,” according to a news release. Luna said the idea came from his own experience with larger gyms that can sometimes feel crowded, impersonal or overwhelming for people trying to establish a routine.

“Atavista Fitness was created for people who want a focused and welcoming place to train,” Luna said. “We designed the space around fundamentals of strength, movement and long-term health so members can build real consistency and feel supported every time they walk in.”

Luna describes the philosophy behind the gym as “low consumption and high effort,” encouraging members to focus on performance, longevity and overall well-being rather than trends or distractions. The name Atavista comes from the word atavistic, meaning a return to something ancestral — a reflection of the gym’s focus on strength, movement and sustainable habits.

“As a locally owned gym, we have the ability to stay focused on the environment we want to create,” Luna said. “We’re building something for this community, not trying to replicate a national model.”

Atavista plans to host member gatherings, charitable initiatives and opportunities to give back while building connections among members. The standard membership is $40 per month.
