[TAMA COUNTY, Iowa] — The Tama County Sheriff’s Office is requiring yearly mental health visits for all full-time deputies, dispatchers and jail staff.

The Board of Supervisors approved the plan this week. Sheriff Casey Schmidt said the requirement aims to take a proactive approach to mental health for employees who face emotional and traumatic situations on the job.

“The ups and downs of that roller coaster ride of the adrenaline and the different types of calls over time, it adds up,” Schmidt said.

The mental wellness visits will cost about $5,000, which will be covered by the county health fund.
