As National Senior Health and Fitness Day approaches (May 27), a new housing model is gaining traction: active adult apartment communities as an alternative to traditional independent living. The growth is driven by older adults seeking independence alongside built-in community and wellness programming, without the need for daily care.
Charleston reflects this shift clearly. Communities such as Restore at Carolina Park in Mount Pleasant, Overture Daniel Island and Overture West Ashley are designed around this model. All three are managed by Greystar, which is headquartered in Charleston.
According to GlobeNewswire, the U.S. active adult market is projected to grow from $661 billion in 2025 to more than $900 billion by 2033.
Restore at Carolina Park, the newest of the three, shows how this model comes to life locally. The 55-plus community combines maintenance-free living with a strong emphasis on health-forward programming, daily events and hospitality-style service, designed for active, independent adults.
