A community health challenge is returning to the Gateway City, with Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino inviting residents to lace up their shoes for Move With the Mayor: Laredo to kick off the event next week.
Move With the Mayor will begin Tuesday from 9-10 a.m. inside the food court at Mall del Norte, 5300 San Dario Ave.

This year’s initiative will include fitness walks across each city district aimed at tracking progress for the Neighborhood Challenge.
A weekly walking club will take place each Tuesday from April 14 to June 2 at the following dates and locations:
April 21, 9-10 a.m., Chacon Bat Park, 1104 S. Meadow
April 28, 9-10 a.m., Jovita Idar Park, 5911 Thomas Ave.

May 5, 9-10 a.m., North Central Park, 10202 International Ave.
May 12, 9-10 a.m., Independence Hills Park, N. Merida Drive
May 19, 9-10 a.m., Haynes Recreation Center, 2101 Clark Crossing
May 26, 9-10 a.m., St. Peter’s Plaza, 1814 Victoria St.

June 2, 9-10 a.m., Mall del Norte food court, 5300 San Dario Ave.
The Neighborhood Challenge will conclude with a Health Fair Block Party scheduled for June 5 at 9 a.m. at the Laredo Public Health Department, 2600 Cedar Ave.
Each event will include the Laredo Public Health Department mobile unit at select locations, offering free blood pressure and glucose checks. Fasting is required for glucose testing.
Residents can participate by downloading the Strava mobile app, creating a free account and joining their district’s Strava club to track physical activity and compete with other districts.

Top performers from each district will be recognized by the mayor during a City Council meeting.
Move With the Mayor is a nationwide initiative launched in 2014 by a mayor in Indianapolis to promote physical activity and cardiovascular health. It has since grown into a nationwide effort encouraging walking and other forms of exercise among residents.
