When Purpose Finds You: The Story of Pohorence Health and Wellness

We all sketch out a future at some point, neat lines, clear plans, a life that makes sense on paper. But for Joel Pohorence, a local man who grew up in Southeast Texas, that path took an unexpected turn when purpose stepped in and rewrote the blueprint. Today, that journey has come full circle at Pohorence Health and Wellness, where personal experience, loss, and calling shaped not just a career, but a mission to care for others in a more meaningful way.
One of the earliest influences came from watching his father struggle to manage his medications.
“My dad had a hard time understanding what he was taking and why,” Pohorence said. “You sit there and realize how many people are probably in that same position, just trying to keep up with something that’s supposed to help them, but they don’t fully understand it.”
That experience stayed with him. It planted the idea that healthcare should not feel confusing or distant, but accessible and clear.
“I remember thinking, there has to be a better way to help people navigate their health,” he said. “Not just hand them something and send them on their way.”
But it was a much heavier moment during his time as an EMT that ultimately cemented his calling.
Pohorence recalls being present at the death of one of his closest friends, an experience that reshaped his perspective on life, health, and purpose.
“I was there,” he said.“I was called to that scene, and it’s something you don’t ever forget.”
In that moment, the abstract idea of helping people became something urgent and deeply personal.
“It changes you,” Pohorence said. “You start looking at life differently. You start asking what you’re really supposed to be doing, who you’re supposed to be helping.”
Those experiences became the emotional foundation for Pohorence Health and Wellness, a place built not just to treat, but to guide.
When he began building the clinic, Pohorence said everything seemed to align in a way he could not ignore.
“I got approved for my business loan on the last day of the Daniel Fast,” he said. “I got this building a day before someone else was about to rent it. It all lined up perfectly.”
For Pohorence, those moments reinforced his belief that he was stepping into something he was meant to do.
That sense of purpose was quite literally built into the structure of the clinic itself. Before the finishing touches were completed, family and friends gathered to write scripture along every doorway inside the building.
“Every room, every doorframe has scripture on it,” he said. “You can’t see it now, but it’s there. It’s part of the foundation.”
Today, the clinic offers a range of non-invasive treatments designed to improve both confidence and overall wellness. Services include aesthetic procedures like dermal fillers, as well as therapies aimed at helping patients feel better physically and mentally.
But for Pohorence, the treatments are only part of the story.
“It’s not just about how someone looks,” he said. “It’s about how they feel, how they function, and how confident they are walking out of here.”
He emphasizes education and communication with every patient, ensuring they understand what they are receiving and why.
“I don’t ever want someone to feel confused like my dad did,” Pohorence said. “That’s a big part of why I do this. People deserve to understand their own health.”
That approach has helped create an environment where patients feel seen, heard, and supported, something Pohorence believes is often missing in traditional healthcare settings.
“We take the time,” he said. “We talk through things. We make sure people are comfortable. That matters.”
Looking back, Pohorence sees a clear thread connecting his past experiences to where he is now.
“Everything that happened led me here,” he said. “Even the hard moments. Especially the hard moments.”
Through those experiences, Pohorence Health and Wellness has become more than a clinic. It is a reflection of a journey shaped by loss, responsibility, faith, and a desire to make healthcare more human.
“I believe there’s a reason for all of it,” Pohorence said. “And this is what I’m supposed to be doing.”Pohorence Health and Wellness is located at 2480 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. For more information, visit https://www.pohorencehealthwellness.com.
