NEW YORK, New York — For many audience members attending Shen Yun at Lincoln Center, the performance was more than a visual spectacle; it was an emotional and spiritual experience that lingered long after the curtain fell. Some described it as “uplifting,” others as “out of this world,” but for one family, the impact was immediate and deeply personal.

Founded in 2006, Shen Yun Performing Arts is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, showcasing the beauty and splendor of traditional Chinese culture and art prior to the ravages of communism. The company currently boasts eight equally-sized troupes that tour and perform across the world simultaneously, putting on a brand new production each year.

A performance that moves the heart

“She cried at the end. She really did,” said Mary Jane who attended the show with her mother and sister. “It was just beautiful, the costumes, the acrobatics, we really enjoyed it so much.”

The emotional resonance of Shen Yun was a recurring theme among audience members, particularly during the show’s closing scenes. Viewers noted that the performance not only showcased technical excellence but also highlighted the struggles of others. “We like the reference to people who are suffering,” said Mary Jane. “Everyone’s life matters… we need the show to continue that awareness.”

The ending, which emphasizes compassion and spiritual redemption, left a lasting impression on the family. “You come away from the show feeling that you can be a better person… and be kind to your fellow man,” she added.

Based in New York, Shen Yun is composed by a group of talented artists from around the world, including musicians, soloists, choreographers, and dancers, with the goal of reviving and promoting 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture and values.

‘Spectacular and golden’

For William and Carmen Valentine, attending Shen Yun was a powerful and uplifting experience from start to finish. “It was spectacular and golden,” William said. “I loved it. I want to see it again.” Carmen echoed that enthusiasm, describing the performance as “beautiful” and rich in culture. “Peace, love, and togetherness — that’s the message I got,” she said.

Both said the show exceeded their expectations, praising everything from the choreography to the elaborate costumes. “The dancing, the wardrobe, the colors, everything was built positive,” Carmen said. “It was more than I expected.”

Audience members also highlighted Shen Yun’s unique integration of music and storytelling, particularly the vocal performances. “The song… her voice is so beautiful,” said Carmen, referring to the classical Chinese soprano. “The message from God, that He’s going to save us, it was just so beautiful.” The show’s themes of spirituality and divine connection resonated strongly with viewers. “It was heavenly,” she said. “When they showed the clouds, it was like heaven.”

The seamless interaction between the digital backdrop and live performers added another layer of immersion. “It was out of this world,” William said. “The way they interact with the screen and the real person, it was beautiful.”

Beyond the choreography, Shen Yun’s signature use of a high-tech integrative, digital backdrop brings scenes from different dynasties, celestial realms, and ethnic regions to life. The show is also guided by two emcees who explain each segment in both English and Chinese, making each storyline more accessible to a wider audience.

A celebration of culture and humanity

Beyond its artistic elements, Shen Yun offered audiences a window into traditional Chinese culture, one that many felt was both educational and inspiring. “I think it wants everyone in the world to be together,” Carmen said. “We all live on one planet… we should get along with one another.”

That universal message of unity and compassion stood out as one of the performance’s most powerful takeaways. “That message is love,” she added. “And I think that love will come to all.”

Aside from showcasing stunning choreography, acrobatics, and a live orchestra that combines traditional Western and classical Chinese instruments, Shen Yun’s performances also depict legends and historical stories from ancient China as well as modern tales of bravery and oppression taking place in China today.

For others, the show also served as a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and freedom of expression. “I was interested in what it was like prior to communism, and then how it evolved,” said Lisa. “I thought it was beautifully done.” When asked if they would recommend the show to family and friends, William said, “Everyone. I’m going to recommend it to everyone.”

A meaningful experience for families

That sense of cultural discovery was especially meaningful for first-time attendees Jackie Brechbill and her daughter, Somi, who attended the performance as a birthday celebration. “We just thought we were coming for entertainment,” Jackie said. “But we’re actually learning a lot about the culture, which is really nice.”

The pair praised the show’s visual richness and storytelling. “The dancers are beautiful. We love the costumes,” they said, noting the “water dance” as a favorite and highlighting the seamless effect “when people jump off the screen onto real life.”

For Jackie, a former teacher, the performance was both artistic and educational. “It’s very colorful, and they’re all very talented. We’re happy to be here,” she said.

For those who attended Shen Yun at Lincoln Center, the performance delivered more than entertainment, it offered a sense of connection, reflection, and hope. Whether through its vivid storytelling, spiritual themes, or emotional depth, the production left audiences with a renewed appreciation for kindness, culture, and shared humanity.
