Let’s talk about vitamins 💪 I recently had multiple patients say their previous doctor never told them to take a bariatric-grade vitamin and then their labs showed vitamin deficiencies that are impacting their daily lives. So, let’s talk about why vitamins are so important after bariatric surgery.

🤔How is a bariatric multivitamin different from a normal one?
Bariatric patients have altered GI anatomy – you don’t absorb vitamins the same way as you did preoperatively. Your body needs higher levels of fat soluble vitamins such as A, B, D, K, E, and iron.

🤔What happens if you don’t get enough of those vitamins?
Deficiencies can cause vision loss, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, bleeding problems, hair loss, rashes, and even neurological issues.

🚫Gummy vitamins?
Gummy vitamins are packed with sugar, and the “sugar free” gummies are packed with carbs from sugar substitutes. Most importantly, gummy vitamins don’t have a high enough concentration of vitamins – you would be taking handfuls of gummies.

🚫Vitamin patches?
Patch absorption through the skin can be minimal at best. Patches are also not as regulated as oral supplements, which can lead to purity concerns.

TL;DR the safest way to avoid vitamin deficiencies after bariatric surgery is to take a bariatric-grade multivitamin.
