Parliament’s ethics committee has recommended lifting the immunity of New Democracy lawmakers Charalambos Athanasiou and Anastasios (Tasos) Chatzivasileiou, whose names appear in a case file from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office related to an investigation into OPEKEPE, the Greek agency responsible for distributing and auditing EU agricultural subsidies.
A plenary vote on the two lawmakers, along with 11 other New Democracy MPs for whom the committee has also recommended lifting immunity, is scheduled for Wednesday.
Athanasiou and Chatzivasileiou both asked the committee to lift their parliamentary immunity, expressing confidence in the justice system while denying any wrongdoing.
