As Jill Abramson points out in her April 17 op-ed, “Are mainstream news media finally ready to examine Trump’s mental fitness?” polling shows “a majority of Americans believe Trump ‘lacks the mental fitness to serve effectively’ as president.” We need Congress to call President Trump’s doctors to testify on his fitness to serve and explain why he seems to have been given so many cognitive tests. The doctors can testify openly, if warranted, because the HIPAA rules governing medical privacy have a “duty to warn” requirement that allows doctors to circumvent those privacy rules when there is a risk of danger to the public.
A cognitively impaired president — and many Americans feel that is the case now — is not only a danger to the American people, he is a danger to the world.
