How to Keep Immunity Strong During the Coronavirus Outbreak

With the current coronavirus outbreak, or COVID-19, you naturally want to do all you can to avoid getting sick until the outbreak passes. Besides avoiding people who have contracted the virus, the best thing you can do is support your immune system so your body can resist infections.

Method 1 : Following a Healthy Diet

1. Incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables into every meal. Fruits and vegetables are the cornerstones of an immune-boosting diet. They contain crucial vitamins A, B, C, and E, minerals, and antioxidants to keep your immune system functioning.

2. Get vitamin D from fish and dairy products. Vitamin D supports your body’s immune response so you can fight infections. The daily recommendation for children and adults is 600 IU (internal units).

3. Eat nuts and seeds for more vitamin E. Vitamin E is another building block of your immune system. Adults over 14 years old need 15 mg per day.

4. Get plenty of lean protein so your body can repair itself. Proteins help your body regenerate tissues, which is important for your immune response.

5. Take multivitamin supplements if you have any deficiencies. Most people get enough vitamins and minerals from their regular diet as long as they eat right.

6. Reduce your intake of processed or sugary foods. Just as some foods help support your immune system, some others can suppress it. Avoid processed or sugary foods high in saturated fats.

Method 2 : Staying Calm and Rested

1. Reduce stress to keep your immune system healthy. Stress drains your immune system and leaves you more susceptible to illness. While this is a very stressful time and you’ll probably find it hard to relax, you have to do all you can to reduce your stress.

3. Stay connected with friends and family during the outbreak. Social isolation can make you feel anxious and stressed, which depresses your immune system. A good way to keep yourself grounded and calm is maintaining your social network.

4. Speak to a therapist if you have trouble controlling your stress. With so much going on in the world, it’s completely normal to have trouble controlling your stress and anxiety. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a therapist or counselor for help managing your feelings.

Method 3 : Adopting a Healthy Lifestyle

1. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. Exercise has a positive effect on immune health, so try to stay active. Commit to getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day to boost your immunity.

2. Wash your hands to prevent infections from spreading. Washing your hands often helps prevent COVID-19 from spreading, but it also prevents you from getting other illnesses like a common cold. Small infections like this depress your immunity and you’ll be less able to fight off a more serious illness like COVID-19 if you’re exposed.

3. Make sure your vaccinations are up to date. While there are no vaccines for COVID-19, having your other vaccinations helps keep your immune system stronger. Make sure you’ve gotten all the required vaccines and also a flu shot.

4. Reduce your alcohol intake. While it might be tempting to drink more often while you’re in isolation, high alcohol consumption depresses your immune system. .

5. Quit smoking, or don’t start at all. Smoking introduces toxins into your body and lowers your immunity. If you smoke, it’s best to cut back or quit to improve your immune response.
