A pregnant woman needs more vitamins, folic acids, iron and calcium than a normal woman. Sometimes even a good diet is not able to fulfill the requirement, so she should take these supplements for these vitamins and minerals during her pregnancy under the supervision of a Gynecologist. At various stages of pregnancy, amount of supplement to be taken varies. So, must consult with your Gynecologist before taking any supplement.
1. Folic Acid
Importance: It is also called Vitamin B12. It prevents birth defects in the baby’s brain and spinal cord.
Food Sources: Green leafy vegetables, cereals, citrus fruits, beans etc.
2. Iron
Importance: It makes more blood to supply the baby with oxygen. Getting too little iron during pregnancy can lead to anemia.
Food Sources: Green leafy vegetables, dried fruit, and nuts contain iron, lean meat etc.
3. Vitamin C
Importance: It increases the absorption of iron. It also protects cells and helps keep them healthy.
Food Sources: Oranges and orange juice, red and green peppers, strawberries, broccoli etc.
4. Calcium
Importance: This mineral is used to build baby’s bones, teeth and muscles.
Food sources: Milk, cheese, yogurt, soya beans, salmon fish, tomato, green leafy like spinach etc.
5. Vitamin D
Importance: It is used to increase the absorption of calcium and phosphate.
Food Sources: Oily fish like salmon, eggs, red meat etc.
Sunlight is the best resource of Vitamin D.
All the above supplements should be taken under the supervision of Gynecologist.
Vitamins to avoid
Vitamin A: Vitamin A is important for fetal vision development and immune function but too much vitamin A can be harmful. It can have toxic effects on the body that can lead to liver damage.
Vitamin E: It plays many important roles in the body and is involved in gene expression and immune function. It is not recommended to take it as supplements as it increase the risk of abdominal pain and premature rupture of the amniotic sack.
