Thiamine deficiency is caused by low levels of thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, and it is common in alcoholics. A severe, chronic form of the disease is known as beriberi, of which there are two main types: wet beriberi and dry beriberi. Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is a form of dry beriberi, and it is characterized by the presence of both Wernicke encephalopathy and alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome.
