Though everyone seems to acknowledge the fact that age is clearly the greatest risk factor for severe COVID-19, I haven’t seen a whole lot of discussion about why this may be the case. It seems that most have accepted the fact that as we age we get weak, inevitably, but I’ve never bought this narrative. In this snippet from my podcast (Fundamental health, available on iTunes, YouTube and everywhere) this week with Ivor Cummins, we dig into what’s going on here. We discuss that age itself might NOT be the problem here (I’d love to debate @davidsinclairphd on this), but rather increasing insulin resistance, worsening mitochondrial function, leptin resistance, lower muscle mass, and worse overall nutritional status (we know CLEARLY that nutrient status affects the immune system as well). We also note that the strong correlation between vitamin D status and COVID-19 severity reflects much more than vitamin D. We know that 25-OH vitamin D levels are lowered by insulin resistance, inflammation etc. We can’t just take vitamin D and expect to be protected against coronavirus. Those with higher vitamin D status got there by being in the real sunlight (those who take vitamin D supplements are a small fraction of the population), eating nutrient rich foods, and by not being insulin resistant. Taking a pill is not a substitute for true health and never will be. As Ivor says, “I’d rather be a metabolically healthy 80 year old than a 55 year old with insulin resistance.” What do you think about all of this? Is age truly the biggest risk factor for severe COVID-19?
