Doctors agree that exercise and meditation are two important things we can do to strengthen our body’s immune system and help it fight off the coronavirus. It works by reducing stress, since stress releases cortisol which suppresses the immune response. One of the best experts on meditation was the Buddha, and one of his first instructions to his monks was the breath meditation, a part of the first section of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipatthana Sutta). Mentally following the breathing is a way to calm the mind’s thought-anxiety and relax into ‘Natural Great Peace’. Zen teachers have a saying: ‘Breath Sweeps Mind’. Breath meditation is still widely practiced in the Buddhist tradition, and many eminent monks have practiced it their whole lives. It is for both beginners and experts.
