“Self care measures for the promotion of health and immunity boosting according to Ayurveda.”
The function of immune system is critical in the human response to the infectious diseases. Viral infection induces oxidative stress and cause damage to airway cells. There areevidences that identify stress, nutrition and immunity as co-factor in infectious disease susceptibility. The mainstay in management of CORONA has been supportive care, nutrition, further progression in absence of any antiviral agent or vaccine.
COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new strain of corona virus. This virus is linked of the same family of viruses as SARS. Common signs of infections include fever, cough and soreness of throat, myalgia, fatigue and breathing difficulties. Older people and people with chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart diseases, appear to be more at risk of developing symptoms.

Ayurveda, being the one of world’s oldest healing system is based on a belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between circulatory (Vata), metabolic (Pitta) and matter (Kapha) aspects and bliss at the level of senses, mind and Aatma. It aims to promote good health and not just treat diseases. The same mechanism is playing out in the Covid-19 infected cases as the people recovering are due to their strong immunity mainly and not due to medicine. Even though there is no medicines/vaccine for this viral infection, still, a big chunk of patients are recovering and also the fact that only those with compromise immunity are unable to get rid of infection. This clearly shows that if Ayurveda support is given to the patients, recovery could be faster and without much damage to the system.
Emphasis on avoidance of causative factors and enhancing immunity against host of infections are characteristics of Ayurvedic Management.
The holistic approach of Ayurveda gives focus on prevention through life style medication, dietary management, prophylactics intervention for improving the immunity and simple remedies based on presentation of symptoms.Ayurveda extensively describes many ways on preventive care through Dincharya andRitucharya which means daily and seasonal regimens and healthy diet as per ones own body type to maintain the healthy life.
Recently ministry of AYUSH issued certain recommendations and self care guidelines for preventive health measures and boosting immunity with special reference to respiratory health. Essentially the advisory does not contain any kind of medicine but tweak the lifestyle of individuals with a combination of healthy leaving and yoga.
The awareness about one self and harmony with nature can achieve stronger immunity which has been emphasised across Ayurveda scriptures:Prevention is better than cure.
