There are currently no studies demonstrating that sauna use is protective against COVID-19. However, an abundance of scientific evidence demonstrates that sauna use promotes mild hyperthermia, which in turn induces a wide array of beneficial physiologic responses. These responses reduce oxidative stress and inflammation and activate cellular defense systems, providing protection against a wide range of both acute and chronic respiratory illnesses, including colds, pneumonia, asthma, and others. Critical components of hyperthermia-induced protective responses are heat shock proteins, which play key roles in mediating immune function. Hot baths and showers provide similar benefits, albeit to a less degree. In this clip, Dr. Rhonda Patrick describes data supporting sauna use as a means to improve lung function.
