COVID-19:What is cytokine Storm and How it is managed.

In this video we will talk why SARS-COV2 affects some people more than others.
Basically all those weak and vulnerable people whose immune system is weak and defective,are not able to mount a proper immune attack against the virus.
Our immune system comprises of two limbs i.e Innate and Acquired.
Innate system is a natural one and reacts very quickly against the virus using its messaging proteins which we call cytokines and this innate system later on also activates the acquired limb of the immune system i.e T cells by presenting a part of the virus as antigen presenting cell(APC).
After being activated T cells will activate the B cells which will produce not only immunoglobulin but also Memory B cells for future attacks.
But in these weak and vulnerable patients the immune system is so weak and defective that not only the innate limb fails to mount a proper and coordinated attack on the virus but the acquired limb also fails to generate antibodies against the virus and this will ultimately result in CYTOKINE STORM which later on results in damage to lungs or diffuse alveolar damage.
Current approach in management is to exploit this pathogenesis and use a drug which has the ability to block the IL-6 i.e Tocilizumab.
