Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is an important water-soluble vitamin ( 1 ). It plays an essential role in the production of your red blood cells and DNA, as well as the proper functioning of your nervous system.
Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal foods, including meats, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy.
Anaemia or nervous system injury from lower than normal amounts of vitamin B12.
Vitamin B12 deficiency may lead to a reduction in healthy red blood cells (anaemia). The nervous system may also be affected. Diet or certain medical conditions may be the cause.
Symptoms are rare but can include fatigue, breathlessness, numbness, poor balance and memory trouble.
Treatment includes dietary changes, B12 shots or supplements.
