During COVID-19, we’re all talking about ways to boost immunity in order to fight off the coronavirus.
This isn’t accomplished by adding another vitamin to your daily regime. Food is an ideal medicine to improve health and ward off illnesses by eating whole food plant-based items.
Did you know that 60% of the average American’s diet is made up of ultra-processed foods?
Often, the culprit of overprocessed food additives comes from sugar, carefully renamed so that most consumers have no idea that the additive is sugar.
Check the apple juice bottle that you feed your children. It comes from apples and says ‘natural’ on the label, so it’s another way to feed your children fruit, right?
Wrong.
Many apple juice brands, particularly the cheaper versions, can have up to 40% sugar. No one should be feeding this to children, or any living beings, for that matter. The same goes for orange juice. Just give your child a sliced orange instead.
Then there is salt–have you ever noticed, like sugar-laden foods, that the more you eat, the more you crave it? Food additives strike again.
If you need to improve your intake of high-quality vitamins and minerals, don’t reach for a pill bottle, reach for a tomato or a pear or an avocado. This way, you’re consuming antioxidant-rich foods that will naturally give your health a boost.
How do you know if you are getting the right vitamins in foods? Eat a rainbow of natural foods and you’ll be in great shape.
In my career as a bariatric surgeon and an obesity treatment speciality, the medicine I prescribe to most of my patients is actually real food. It seems counterintuitive, but it’s true.
Food can be the best medicine, even in the era of the COVID-19, if you make the right choices and boost immunity.
