The World Health Organisation (WHO) is conducting further research to find out whether those who have recovered from Covid-19 are immune to the disease. This comes on the heels of thousands of persons recovering from the disease globally and reports that a few might have been reinfected.
“One would expect that a person who generates a full blown immune respond with detectable antibodies should have protection for a period of time, we just dont know what that period of time is says the Emergencies Chief of the World Health Organization, Dr Mark Ryan.
Globally, Covid-19 has infected more than a million, there have been thousands of deaths but more than that number have recovered. In some countries cases are doubling every three to four days and the covid-19 pandemic appears to be more deadly than 2009 H1N1 flu. The World Health Organisation says it needs more information from recovered patients.
“There is much than 300,000 patients globally who have recovered and we need to better understand what that response is,” says WHO Technical Lead Dr Maria Van Karkhove.
In Jamaica, there has been no report – to date – of a recovered Covid-19 patient being reinfected. However, steps are being taken to ensure that those recovered are following guidelines for their protection and the rest of the population. Self-quarantine, curfews, along with the wearing of masks are slowly becoming the new normal.
