In this snippet from my podcast on Coronavirus (Fundamental Health, available on iTunes, YouTube and everywhere) earlier this week I review a bit about what we know regarding nutrient needs and the immune system. As I discuss here, it’s pretty clear that A,C,D,E,B6,B2 and B12 as well as zinc, selenium, copper, and iron are VERY important for optimal immune function. Other than vitamin C (which I have discussed at length in my book, The Carnivore Code and elsewhere), animal foods are CLEARLY superior sources of ALL of these nutrients in more bioavailable forms. There’s an entire chapter in my book about how many of these are present in plants in different forms (ie betacarotene, ALA, etc) or forms that are bound to phytic acid and other cheating molecules which make them much LESS BIOAVAILABLE. Regarding vitamin C, though the risks appear minimal with moderate doses (greater than 500mg daily), I remain unconvinced that doses to this magnitude are needed or beneficial for humans beyond what can find in fresh animal foods. I’d be much more worried about getting enough of the other nutrients I’ve listed above that mega-dosing only vitamin C right now. Riboflavin (B2) remains particularly interesting to me as well. It’s just very hard to get enough of this one without animal foods. I know must sound like broken record at this point, but I find this point hard to overstate: good nutrition builds a robust immune system. Eat nose to tail. End of story. What do you think?
