During this Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, I’d like to share some tips to remain calm. The purpose is to bolster your immune system as well as improve your emotional well-being and presence.
Practical help: Realize your body is working for you: Be aware that your body has an enormous capacity to heal itself, even after years of stress. This is a potent solution. Even after years of severe trauma, young children whose bodies had terrible responses to stress (neglect, abuse, war) made full recoveries.
Be aware of the underlying issue: How am I going to start living with my stress response? How am I going to start managing this?
Check the news – but do some meditation, prayer or breathing exercises before and after.
Avoid doomsday predictors – Don’t be in denial, but if someone you watch is always negative, don’t watch. They cannot predict the future!
Master self-care: no better time than when external stressors are low (sleep, exercise, play, diet, nutrition – reduced stress improves absorption of nutrients). Exercise: Immune system is improved in short-term stress. NOT in long-term stress.
Emotional blocks: broken heart, difficult past, traumas, anger issues, a primary driver of illness is chronic negative emotion going unprocessed. Why is it that when we feel like nobody loves us, do we eat Oreo cookies? (Robert Sapolsky).
Learn how to stop procrastinating: Working from home may require this. It’s a skill that can change your life immeasurably. Avoiding stress does not mean doing nothing. In fact, suppressing the creative impulse can dramatically increase stress.
Keep perspective: Not the end of the world.
Develop an authentic sense of community: Not being considerate of others creates an internal sense of separation and guilt. Guilt is a very destructive emotion. Put other people’s welfare as a top priority. Look out for the vulnerable. Shop only for what you need. Be mindful of the most vulnerable.
Show gratitude: feel it and show it to those around you. Say thank you to those in shops, delivering to your home, medical staff.
