NUTRITION WHY’S #32: WHY BIOTIN? You need Biotin for healthy hair, skin, and nails. It is also known as Vitamin B7 and like other B vitamins you need it every day to help turn foods into energy in your cells. An old fashioned name for Biotin is Vitamin H where the “H” stands for hair and “Haute”(the German word for skin). The skin contains the hair follicles and the nails grow out from the skin, so the nutrition of all three are connected. Deficiency of Biotin is rare on a normal diet, because Biotin is found in many foods and is made by your gut bacteria. There is a protein in raw egg white called Avidin which binds Biotin and can cause deficiency if a lot of raw eggs are consumed which is pretty rare. Since Biotin nourishes the hair, people take supplements to thicken hair or stop hair loss. There is some evidence that Buotin can strengthen brittle nails but more research is needed. While Biotin is one factor in hair thickness, the most common causes of hair thinning in women are changes in female hormones around pregnancy and menopause or insufficient protein during weight loss diets. For men, pattern baldness is hereditary and affected by male hormones more than nutrition. In my case “Grass doesn’t grow on busy streets!” Biotin is found in many foods and is produced by bacteria. The recommended daily intake is 30 micrograms. Supplements are available as tablets of 1000 to 10,000 micrograms which are considered safe.
