METABOLISM #3: MICROBIOME AND VITAMIN K- Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin along with vitamins A,D,and E. The “K” stands for the term for blood clotting (Coagulation spelled “Koagulation” in German). It programs the production of a protein that binds Calcium to stimulate blood clotting. Another protein binds Calcium in bone and vitamin K is also involved in supporting bone health. Most vitamin K comes from eating dark green leafy vegetables. In plants vitamin K is used for producing energy from the sun(photosynthesis). This form of vitamin K is called vitamin K1. Our gut bacteria make forms of vitamin K called MK7-MK11. So these forms of vitamin K are examples of Postbiotics. There are many other examples of Prebiotics converted into Postbiotics and many foods including fruits, vegetables, and spices are broken down to smaller chemicals called metabolites. Balanced Nutrition and Healthy Active Lifestyle promotes the normal functioning of your Microbiome and Vitamin metabolism. The Postbiotics are modified by Human Metabolism which I will discuss next time- So stay tuned!
