METABOLISM PEARLS #13: LUTEIN FOR EYES AND BRAIN-Vitamin A in the retina converts the energy of light into electrical signals that travel through the optic nerve to your brain to create vision. However, that light contains ultraviolet radiation you cannot see that could damage the eye just as it can cause sunburn on your skin. The part of the eye where the lens of the eye focuses the light coming in is called the macula. The macula concentrates Lutein, a phytonutrient from spinach, avocado, and dark greens in the yellow-green group of my What Color is Your Diet? Color Code and its yellow spectrum absorbs the blue UV radiation like a sunscreen would on your skin. Lutein is also a fat-soluble antioxidant like Vitamin A and is transported to the brain via the optic nerve where it becomes the predominant carotene(58% of carotenoids compared to only 28% in the blood). You can measure Lutein in the macula with a blue light and high levels are associated with better brain health in younger and elderly individuals. You need 6 to 10 mg per day from foods or supplements and Lutein is included in eye health supplements in these amounts. Don’t forget to wear sunglasses when you are out in the sun, get your eyes checked every year, and get your Lutein from supplements and green vegetables (sunglasses inside your eyes) to preserve your vision and maintain brain health!!Next time I discuss Vitamin D-So stay tuned!!
