METABOLISM PEARLS #18: CITRUS FLAVONOIDS AND VITAMIN C – Some high fat diets restrict or eliminate fruits which is not a good idea. Fruits provide vitamins, minerals, and fiber to your diet and are low in calories. The Citrus fruits form the Yellow-Orange Group of Phytonutrients in my What Color is Your Diet? Color Code and were formed by crossing the Citron, an ancient lemon; the Pomelo, a kind of grapefruit; and the Mandarin Orange. They all have vitamin C which is an important antioxidant. It supports collagen formation in the skin, and restores oxidized vitamin E in all the cells of your body as we discussed. A single fruit often has more than the 20 mg needed to prevent scurvy – the vitamin deficiency seen in sailors and pirates in the 1700’s which gave rise to bleeding and blackened gums in many famous pirates and caused British sailors to take limes with them at sea so they were called”limeys”. So in the last twenty years in an attempt to encourage more fruit intake for cancer prevention, the RDA was increased to 90 mg per day. You also get unique phytonutrients including the Citrus flavonoids Hesperidin, Nariginin, Nobelitin, and Tangeretin. While you don’t hear much about their antioxidant benefits mostly studied in cells and animals, you do hear that people taking cholesterol-lowering drugs should avoid grapefruits because Naringinin reduces the activity of an enzyme needs to activate statin drugs like Lipitor, Crestor, and Mevacor. This effect is demonstrated when in a study a subject drinks a lot of grapefruit juice ( in my research we gave double-strength grapefruit juice for three days, since the same enzymes acting in fruits often act on drugs. The so-called “Drug-metabolizing enzymes evolved long before there were any drugs in order to clear the body of the phytonutrients like those in Citrus and other fruits and vegetables.
