KEY SUPPLEMENTS #1: WHAT IS A KEY SUPPLEMENT? A Key Supplement is a Vitamin, Mineral, or Phytonutrient that you take to provide you with nutritional benefits not obtained from the foods in your diet. Supplements fill in what is missing from the diet but cannot make up for a poor diet. While it used to be taught that you could get everything your body needs by eating a variety of foods, we now know that certain nutrients need to be supplemented as nutrition science has advanced over the last 40 years to reveal new health benefits for key vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients at a time when classical vitamin deficiencies like scurvy (vitamin C deficiency), and beri beri (vitamin B deficiency) are rare. A Protein-Rich Shake will have a portion of your daily needs but not the total amount. A multivitamin/multimineral with some phytonutrients is a good first step, but in this series I will discuss some additional key supplements one at a time that you may want to add to your program of Balanced Nutrition and Healthy Active Lifestyle.
