FARMACY AND MICROBIOME #1: FARMACY? – The discovery of the Microbiome and its relationship to a healthy diet rich in protein, fruits, vegetables, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients has set the stage for “Farmacy” which is the use of Balanced Nutrition and Healthy Active Lifestyle for Health and Wellness. This idea is opposed to the popular notion of eating whatever you want on a Western Diet of high fat/high sugar foods without the Phytonutrients and then taking drugs to treat preventable conditions of aging. Over the last 50 years, our diets have been swamped with fast foods and street foods around the world leading to a global epidemic of obesity and age-related chronic disease. This diet leads to an illusion of health since there are just enough vitamins and minerals to avoid classical vitamin deficiency diseases like scurvy and pellagra, but not enough good foods to maintain a healthy Microbiome. The Microbiome on the Western Diet and with aging becomes less populated with the healthy bacteria that carry out the functions shown on the slide maintaining brain health, immunity, normal body fat, and vitamin production. You affect the Microbiome by what you eat or do not eat and in this series of posts, I will discuss what you need every day from Balanced Nutrition and a Healthy Active Lifestyle to maintain your Microbiome!
