VITAMINS

Any of a specific group of organic compounds essential in small quantities for healthy human growth, metabolism, development, and body function; found in minute amounts in plant and animal foods or sometimes produced synthetically; deficiencies of specific vitamins produce specific disorders.

It is a metabolic regulator.
Vitamin theory is given by F.G.Hopkin.
Vitamin – Funk.

Vitamins is of two types
✓ WATER SOLUBLE
∆ B, C, P.
∆ Can’t be stored.
∆ Not harmful when present in excess quantity.

✓ FAT SOLUBLE
∆ A, D, E, K.
∆ Can be stored i.e., in Liver.
∆ Harmful when present in excess quantity which leads to Hypervitaminism.

VITAMIN D – CALCIFEROL

Discovered by Mc.Collum

Sources- Sunlight, Milk, Fish oil, Mutton, Chicken.

Also called as Sunshine Vitamin.

Functions-
Absorption of calcium and potassium.
Formation of Bones and Teeth.

Bones and teeth are made up of Tricalcium phosphate.

VITAMIN E – TOKOFEROL

Sources- Vegetable oil, wheat, rice, fish oil, groundnut.

Functions
Responsible for Skin glow.
Also called as ” Beauty Vitamin “.
Increases Fertility power.
Anti Fertility Vitamin.

Decreases in vitamin E leads to following disease
1- Impotence in Males.
2- Sterility in Females.

VITAMIN K – PHYLLOQUINONE

Sources- Green cabbage, coffee, beans, mutton.

Functions
Help in Blood Clotting.
Also called as ” Clotting Vitamin “.

If VitaminK decreases then haemophilia disease will occur in which there will be no blood clotting.
It is a Genetic Disease.
Also known as Royal disease.
