FAD OR SCIENCE #5: VEGETARIAN VARIATIONS- Vegetarian Diets are a growing trend with 18% of the world’s population claiming to be Vegetarian. However, there are several different forms of Vegetarianism. The most strict is Vegan where only plant foods and plant-derived ingredients are eaten. Even vitamin D cannot be from an animal but must be from a mushroom exposed to ultraviolet light to make vitamin D. Strict Vegan Vegetarians eat only plant foods for ethical and environmental reasons, but Lacto-Ovo Vegetarians also eat eggs and dairy foods. Pescetarians add fish to their Vegetarian diet and Flexitarians or Semi-Vegetarians also eat fish, chicken and occasional red meat. Most of these folks will tell you they are Vegetarians! I recommend a Plant-Based Diet is one where you eat 5 to 9 servings per day of fruits and vegetables along with the right amount of protein from Protein-Rich Shakes and foods along with vitamins and minerals for Balanced Nutrition.
