U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday he signed an executive order to prevent the hoarding of medical supplies such as personal protective equipment. Attorney General William Barr said the order would designate the materials as “scarce” and doing so would prevent people from accumulating them in excess of “reasonable personal or business needs” or selling them in excess of current prices. He said doing so would be a crime.

During the daily press conference on the country’s COVID-19 response, Trump also said the country must stay united as they continue to try and contain the spread of COVID-19, adding the Asian American community must be protected and the spread of the disease was “not their fault.” The message comes amid ongoing criticism Trump has faced for calling the novel coronavirus the “Chinese Virus,” with some politicians expressing concern it could lead to hate crimes against Asian Americans.

As concerns continue over the U.S. economy, the president said that the U.S. could be “open for business” again soon and they’d be making decisions in the next couple weeks despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He said it could happen sooner than the three to four months some health officials have said it could take before people could possibly return to work. He added they “cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself,” saying they would decide after a 15-day period what the next steps they would take to reopen the country.
